Step by step: how to draw Rangoli Designs for Mattu Pongal

1. Mark the 6-to-2 dot grid — rows stepping down from 6 in the middle to 2 at the top and bottom.
2. In the centre draw a small circle and ring it with five rounded petals, marking two short parallel lines inside each petal.
3. On the four diagonals draw four large pointed crescent leaves curving round the flower, and fringe the inner edge of each with short strokes.
4. Along the top, bottom, left and right axes draw a short dash, a dot and a second dash in a line from the petal tip out to the circle.
5. Enclose everything in a circle, run a row of dots along its inside, double the arc at the top and bottom, and set a spiral curl just inside the circle on each of the four sides.
6. Outside the circle draw a cluster of three leaves with a spiral curl at each of the four diagonal corners.
7. On the left and right of the design draw a vertical sprig of spiral curls and small leaves as a side border.
