Step by step: how to draw Deepam Kolam 11 Into 5

1. Mark the 11-to-5 dot grid — eleven dots across the middle row tapering to five at the top and bottom.
2. In the centre draw an eight-petal star flower of pointed petals around a small centre.
3. On each of the four diagonals draw a pair of pointed leaves opening outward from the flower, with a small spiral curl beside them.
4. On the left and right of the flower draw a paisley teardrop with a dotted edge.
5. Above and below the flower draw a lamp with its flame pointing at the flower — a bowl with a dotted rim on a short stand and a teardrop flame with an inner teardrop — with a long midribbed leaf on either side.
6. On the left and right draw a spiral bud enclosed in a loop, with a curved pointed leaf above and below it and a small dotted flower at its tip.
7. Re-trace the outlines in white.
