Step by step: how to draw Kolam Designs for Deepawali
- Mark the 10-to-10 dot grid — a square of ten rows of ten dots.
- In the centre draw a small square, then run double lines from its corners out to the four corners of the grid to make a broad X.
- In each of the four spaces between the arms of the X — top, bottom, left and right — draw an octagon and divide it into a lattice of small squares.
- Fill the four cut-off corners of each octagon with short parallel hatching lines.
- Near each corner end the diagonal arm in a cluster of pointed triangles with their tips pointing out to the two outer edges, and draw a small spiral inside the triangle beside the corner square.
- In each of the four outer corners draw a small square with a single curved hook inside.
