Pongal is the Tamil harvest festival of mid-January — and Pongal kolams are the largest of the year, crowning a month of daily designs.

The word and the pot

Pongal takes its name from Tamil pongu, to boil over: on the festival morning, new-harvest rice is boiled in milk and jaggery until it overflows the pot — abundance made visible. That overflowing paanai (pot) is also the festival’s signature kolam motif, drawn with sun and sugarcane around it. The collection’s two most-watched designs are both pot kolams: Simple Pongal Pot Kolam (over six million views) and Easy Pongal Pot Kolam (over four million).

The four days

The festival runs four days. Bhogi clears out the old — a day Telugu households share (see Bhogi Muggulu, 51 designs). Thai Pongal is the boiling, and the day of the biggest kolams. Maattu Pongal honours the cattle, and Kaanum Pongal is for family visits and outings.

From Margazhi to Pongal

Pongal’s kolams don’t come from nowhere: through the Margazhi month (mid-December to mid-January), kolams grow larger day by day, so the festival arrives on a month of practice. The Pulli Kolam guide (53 designs) explains the dot-grid method behind them.

One harvest, two traditions

The same mid-January harvest moment is celebrated as Sankranti in Telugu households, with muggulu in place of kolams — one festival season, two languages, the same art of the threshold. The Muggulu for Sankranthi collection (92 designs) shows the Telugu side.
