Step by step: how to draw Diya Rangoli Designs

1. Mark the 5-to-1 dot grid — rows tapering from 5 in the middle to a single dot at each end.
2. Join the dots around the centre dot into a tilted square and draw a four-petal flower with a dot centre inside it.
3. From each side of the square sweep out a long pointed leaf, all four leaves turning the same way like a pinwheel.
4. Fill each leaf with slanting vein lines and run a row of dots along its outer edge.
5. On each of the four corners draw a round bud with a spiral inside, opening at the corner into a pointed tip of small petals fringed with short rays and dots.
6. Add spiral curls on either side of each bud where it meets the leaves.
