Step by step: how to draw Pongal Panaai Kolam Designs

1. Mark the 8-to-8 dot grid — eight rows of eight dots in a square.
2. In the centre draw a small circle, then four rounded petals at the top, bottom, left and right, each holding a spiral curl.
3. Between the rounded petals add four slim pointed petals on the diagonals to complete an eight-petal flower.
4. On each of the four corners draw a pongal pot lying along the diagonal, its rounded body toward the centre and decorated with crossed lines and small triangles.
5. Give each pot a scalloped rim band toward the outer corner and two rounded puffs of overflowing pongal above the rim.
6. At the middle of each side join the two neighbouring pots with a small curved stand marked with short lines.
7. On each stand draw a lotus with pointed petals opening outward — four lotuses in all.
