Step by step: how to draw Traditional Thursday Colour Rangoli

1. Mark the 11-to-6 dot grid — a hexagon of rows widening from 6 at the top to 11 in the middle and narrowing back to 6.
2. Draw a small circle around the centre dot.
3. Around it draw six identical motifs in a ring, each turned 60 degrees from the last; begin each with a pair of broad wing-shaped petals spreading from a shared base, a narrow leaf inside each.
4. At the base of each pair of wings draw a small flower of three rounded petals.
5. Beyond each flower add a teardrop with a spiral inside.
6. Between the wing tips draw a small bud — an eye shape fringed at its tip with short lines tipped with dots.
7. Colour the wings purple, yellow and blue in turn, the inner leaves green, the petals orange, the teardrops teal and the buds red, and place a green dot in the centre.
