The impulse rangoli belongs to is older than any surviving record of rangoli itself. Prehistoric communities worldwide decorated their surroundings — painted caves, engraved stones, ornamented pottery, geometric marks — and the subcontinent’s early history is rich in exactly this instinct for visual order. The honest question is what that context does and does not establish about floor drawing.
Settlements make thresholds
As the subcontinent’s early agricultural villages became permanent, homes acquired the architecture the tradition presupposes: defined entrances, courtyards, prepared earthen floors. The stage existed. Whether the play was performed on it, no surviving evidence can say — prepared earth keeps no powder for four thousand years.
The Indus Valley: what we know, and what we do not
The cities of the Indus civilisation (c. 3300–1300 BCE) — Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi — demonstrate sophisticated geometry in their planning, seals, and ornament: symmetric layouts, decorated pottery, symbolic motifs. That much is archaeology. What archaeology has not produced is any direct evidence that Indus households drew rangoli or kolam in the forms practised today. Popular illustrations showing Indus doorsteps with floor designs are modern artistic reconstructions, not discoveries, and this encyclopedia declines to present them as fact. Scholarly opinion is genuinely divided on whether Indus design traditions fed later Indian decorative practice at all — no consensus confirms a direct line, and responsible history says so.
Geometry before mathematics
What can be said with confidence is broader and, in its way, more interesting: practical geometry — equal spacing, mirrored arrangement, circular composition, repeating borders — was mastered by craftspeople across the ancient world through the crafts themselves: building, weaving, pottery, basketry. Rangoli belongs to this lineage of geometry learned by hand. Its mathematical elegance, later formalised by modern researchers, developed through centuries of artistic practice rather than through written formula — precisely the pattern the kolam scholarship documents in the living tradition.
What this establishes
The deep past gives rangoli a context, not a birth certificate: a subcontinent in which geometric decoration, symbolic pattern, and organised domestic space were ancient long before any text names a floor drawing. The tradition’s documented history begins later; its cultural soil is demonstrably old.
