Definition
The chariot — ratham — is the wheeled vehicle of festival drawing: a temple car or sun-carriage rendered with spoked wheels, flag, and canopy, and the most architectural figure in the dotted repertoire.
History
The drawn chariot descends from two great vehicles at once — the temple car of southern festival processions and the sun’s own chariot of the classical imagination — and the muggulu ethnography places it in the harvest sequence, where chariot mornings carry the season toward Ratha Saptami.
Description
The ratham is drawn front-on or in profile: a stepped, tapering body like a gopuram on wheels, concentric-circle wheels beneath, flag above, and often a deity emblem or sun disc within. It is a large-grid figure — chariots demand dot fields with room — and households elaborate the same chariot across successive festival days.
Cultural Context
The chariot is motion made auspicious: commonly read as the deity’s — or the sun’s — journey brought to the household door, procession translated into flour. In the harvest season it carries the sun northward; at temple-festival time it echoes the street’s real car. Attributed readings, drawn in season.
Regional Variations
The chariot is strongest in Telugu Sankranti-season practice; Tamil temple towns draw it when the temple car runs, and Odisha’s festival drawing carries its own ratha imagery around the great procession of Puri.
