Materials and Tools

Before a design exists, a material does. This chapter is about the substances and instruments of the practice: the rice flour and stone powders that draw the white line, the earths and turmeric that colour it, the petals that replace it entirely, and the tools — beginning and ending with the hand — that carry powder to ground. The materials were never neutral: the tradition chose substances that were local, renewable, and meaningful, and much of what rangoli says is said by what it is made of. The essays here tell that story; the individual material entries will join them as their vocabulary terms are promoted.
